A Note from the Kalahari

A Note from
Robert Beall, Chapo Gringo

Everything has changed.

After more than 12 years of returning to this continent, I have learned that Africa is not a destination you visit and leave unchanged. It gets into you. It asks things of you that no other place on earth demands, and in return it gives you something that cannot be bought, packaged, or fully explained to someone who has not stood in the red sand of the Kalahari at first light.

I earned my Professional Hunter's license not because I needed another title, but because I needed to go deeper. Deeper into the land, its wildlife, its people, and the responsibility that comes with being a true steward of this wilderness. Every tracker, every professional hunter, every campfire conversation has added to what I understand about Africa and about myself. The learning never stops. That is the part I did not expect when I started coming here, and the part I love most now.

What keeps me coming back are the people.

The hunters who trust me with their safari. The men and women on the ground who have shared their traditions, welcomed me into their homes, and shown me what Africa really is beyond what any brochure can capture. These are not business relationships. They are friendships built around fires, across languages, and through shared experiences that bond people in ways that ordinary life rarely does. When you book a hunt with Mankwe, you are not booking a transaction. You are stepping into a community that I have spent over a decade building, one relationship at a time.

I've fallen in love with Africa in a way I never imagined possible.

The wildlife is breathtaking. The landscapes are unlike anything else on earth. But it is the culture, the people, and the privilege of being trusted to guide others through this experience that drives everything we do at Mankwe. Every hunt we host carries the weight of that responsibility, and we take it seriously. We want every guest who walks away from this land to carry a piece of it home with them the way I have, year after year, hunt after hunt.

When my time is over, I don't want to be remembered simply as someone who hunted Africa.

I want to be remembered as someone who gave something back to it. That means hunting ethically and with deep respect for the land and its wildlife. It means investing in the people and communities that make these experiences possible. It means building something that my children and grandchildren can look back on with pride, a legacy rooted in adventure, integrity, respect for other cultures, and a love for one of the most extraordinary places on earth.

That is who we are at Mankwe. That is why we do this.

Africa will always have a special place in my heart.

Dangerous 9

The Pursuit

Dangerous Nine
One season.

In the world of African hunting, there is no greater test of skill, nerve, and sheer determination than the Dangerous 9. Nine of the continent's most formidable and unpredictable species, each one capable of killing the man pursuing it. The Cape buffalo that will not go down. The crocodile that moves faster than instinct. The hippo that surfaces without warning. The lion that decides it is no longer being hunted.

To pursue one of these animals in a single safari is considered a serious undertaking. To pursue all nine in a single season is something most hunters never attempt and even fewer complete. Robert Beall, known to the world as Chapo Gringo, did exactly that, and Mankwe Kalahari Lodge was at the center of that pursuit. Nine animals. Nine encounters with genuine danger. The kind of hunting that reminds you, in the most visceral way possible, that out here nothing is guaranteed.
